About E4.com

Why do you and Channel 4 sometimes have programmes with the signer in the corner?

The Office of Communication's Code (Ofcom) on Access Services and the Communications Act 2003 requires us to sign, in British Sign Language (BSL), a proportion of our programmes for the benefit of some deaf viewers.

It is particularly aimed at deaf viewers whose preferred language is BSL and who may gain a fuller understanding of the programmes with a signer than they would from subtitles.

Choosing which programmes to sign, in order to give the deaf viewer a choice of genre whilst minimising the disturbance to the hearing viewer, is not always an easy task. We only select programmes which are repeated or for which an omnibus version is made.

A listing of signed programmes is available at www.channel4.com/access.

Channel 4 sign approximately 6 hours of programmes a week for deaf and hard of hearing viewers and also audio describe around 13 hours a week for those who are blind or partially sighted. E4 sign 1% of programmes and audio describe 4%.
